To increase production capacity and ensure the company is well-equipped for future growth, Shawano-based manufacturing company J&R Machine recently completed a 2,500-square-foot expansion to its existing 17,500-square-foot facility located at 1355 Beauprey Rd.

thumbnail_img_0677-jpg“The expansion will help us better serve our customers and ease the material handling from increased sales and Kanban material release we provide for our customers,” explained Tim Grimm, J&R Machine’s sales engineer.

J&R Machine is a machine shop that specializes in producing complex machined parts. With its team of 28 employees, the company provides value-added manufacturingengineeringCNC machiningmulti-spindle machiningthread rollingfabrication and assembly for OEM manufacturers, defense contract suppliers and clients in a variety of industries, including the medical technology, oil and gas, machinery and equipment, hydraulics, and auto racing sectors.

Company president Tim Tumanic anticipates significant growth in J&R Machine’s future. He expects the company to grow 30-50 percent in size in the next five years. Tumanic believes the company’s recent growth is a result of J&R Machine’s focus on efficiency.

“Increased efficiency has been achieved by updating equipment and targeting jobs that fit J&R Machine’s core competencies,” said Tumanic. “Additionally, we’ve kept our contribution margins where they need to be to support the company’s continued stance on staying current on machinery that increases efficiencies.”

picmonkey-collageThe larger facility will allow incoming material to be placed in its own area at the end of the expansion. The former material area will house new, more capable equipment that will be replacing existing machines by the first or second quarter of 2017.

With the intention of becoming more automated to further increase efficiency, J&R Machine has already purchased and installed two Mori Seiki NLX2500 SY Sub-Spindle Lathes w/ Live Tooling, Chip Blaster High Pressure Coolant 14.00 Max Turn Dia, 27.7 Max Turn Length (one with a Parts Catcher and Conveyor system). These two new machines will give J&R Machine the ability to better serve its customers with additional lights out manufacturing as well as increased production capability from adding the Sub-Spindle ability to a machine already capable of multitasking.

Over the last 20 years, the company has seen 50 percent growth of the physical shop floor as well as a new administrative offices area, employee lunch room, and exercise area.

J&R Machine proudly supported Player Alumni Resources, LLC’s second annual Packers Alumni Charity Fishing Tournament and VIP Event in early June. The tournament took place in Port Washington, WI, with proceeds benefiting Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.

Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is a very moving cause and close to our heart at J&R Machine. According to statistics provided by the National World War II Museum, “approximately every three minutes, a memory of World War II—its sights and sounds, its terrors and triumphs—disappears.” Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is in a race against the clock to honor these veterans as approximately 430 of these heroes pass away each and every day.

Washington, D.C.’s World War II Memorial opened to the public in 2004, and many veterans are unable to travel to it without assistance. That’s where Stars and Stripes Honor Flight comes in. The organization is a branch of the National Honor Flight Network that was founded in Port Washington, and it offers World War II veterans, Korean War veterans, and terminally ill veterans of any conflict a free trip to see their respective memorial. Stars and Stripes Honor Flight also actively promotes educational aspects of this mission in local schools and the community.

The J&R team felt the Packers Alumni Charity Fishing Tournament was a great opportunity to raise money for this impressive organization and make a long-term impact on the lives of military veterans.

A VIP Event, open to the public, kicked off the tournament. At the event, Green Bay Packers alumni shared their experiences on and off the field, and guests from the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight shared stories and the impact donations have on the lives of military veterans. The evening also included a silent auction and autographs. Packers alumni that appeared at the event included Chris Jacke, Frank Winters, Chester Marcol, Marv Fleming, Lynn Dickey, Dave Robinson, Bryce Paup, and Ahman Green* (*appearing at the fishing tournament only).

The second day of the event included the exclusive fishing tournament, with Packers alumni joining each charter team. J&R Machine purchased tickets for a team of five and donated its seats for the 4-hour fishing charter to veterans. It was our way of saluting and giving thanks to the brave men and women who have served our nation and safeguarded our freedom.

About J&R Machine:

J&R Machine strives to provide clients with strategic solutions, advanced knowledge, and exceptional customer service. The company’s value-added manufacturing, engineering, CNC machining, multi-spindle machining, thread rolling, fabrication and assembly are used by OEM manufacturers, defense contract suppliers and clients in a variety of industries including the medical technology, oil and gas, machinery and equipment, hydraulics, and auto racing sectors.

Ineffective tool management tends to drive up costs and reduce efficiency at even the most successful machine shops. At J&R Machine, we demand continuous improvement and are always looking for opportunities to develop competitive differentiation and provide new value to customers. So to more effectively track tool and supply usage and control inventory, we’ve recently installed SupplyPro and Fastenal automated point-of-use dispensing technologies.

The machines dispense items like a two helix-style vending machine, and the tools and other materials are tracked from the time they are requested by J&R Machine employees to the time they are returned.  Supplies such as safety glasses, ear plugs, tape, gloves and batteries are dispensed through the Fastenal system, and shop tooling such as carbide inserts, drills, taps, and band saw blades are dispensed through the SupplyPro system.

So, how do these systems ultimately benefit J&R Machine and our customers?

Increased Productivity

The SupplyPro and Fastenal vending systems help J&R Machine optimize inventory through a web-based system that automates the procurement process, dispensing of supplies and tracking of inventory. For example, when an item is removed from inventory, the system automatically notifies the supplier to initiate replenishment. This has helped J&R Machine eliminate stockouts and reduce downtime.

Improved Accountability

Through the SupplyPro and Fastenal vending systems, employees are also kept accountable for the tools they use. The time spent using a tool is monitored through the tracking capabilities of the units’ inventory control software, and the software will report what is missing, how long it has been missing, and which employee is accountable. J&R Machine can also put daily limits and user limits on what can be consumed.

Cost Reduction

Additionally, with every transaction, items are allocated to a part number, and J&R Machine receives weekly reports telling where every item was used. For example, if a $10,000,000 company is spending 5.0% in shop tooling and 2.0% in shop supplies, that’s $700,000. With allocating every transaction to a part number, the company can now track where that $700,000 is being used, just as if you would allocate shop tooling and shop supplies to a chart of accounts on an income statement. Without a system like this in place, the 7% is placed in a general category, and it is hard to know what part number is consuming the most amount of cost.

Moving forward, J&R Machine will continue to reduce costs by looking at a part number being produced for a customer and analyzing the amount of supplies and tooling being consumed for that particular part. For instance, if a part number is only 5% of sales and consuming 15% of the tooling budget, the part number, quality of tooling, and price of tooling would be reviewed immediately.

Any skepticism as to whether the SupplyPro and Fastenal vending systems could make a real difference faded after six months of use. In addition to reducing downtime, stats have indicated a 1.1% reduction on sales from tooling and shop supplies. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results we’re seeing and look forward to sharing future cost and productivity benefits with our clients.

A recent Citrix report predicts that 2016 is set to become a watershed year for machine shops, noting that, “The industry is showing signs of reinvention in areas including automation, 3D printing and data analysis, and the next five years look to be pivotal in realizing this change.”

With U.S. manufacturing positioned for growth, it’s imperative industry leaders, like J&R Machine, continue to innovate and evolve. J&R Machine has transformed its machine shop and integrated the following emerging trends to improve efficiency and reduce costs in the new year:

3D Printing

To many, the idea of 3D printing (using a computer to create intricate objects out of thin air) sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. And while the concept may be abstract, 3D printing is currently very much “in vogue” in the world of manufacturing. The technology was originally developed for rapid prototyping, and there are plenty of reasons why it has seen a surge in popularity in machine shops. For example, J&R Machine will be incorporating 3D printing to yield faster production cycles by using it to assist customers in product design and evaluation. The possible benefits of 3D printing are truly endless, and J&R Machine plans to use it in a variety of capacities in 2016.

5-Axis Machining

5-axis machining refers to the ability of a CNC machine to move a part on multiple axes at the same time. This is in contrast to 3-axis machining centers that are limited to two directions. J&R Machine will be integrating a 5-axis milling capability to its machine shop this year with the goals of increasing accuracy, extending tool life, and allowing for a higher-quality surface finish. This revolutionary technology will also boost J&R Machine’s productivity by reducing the time and cost of preparing fixtures.

Displayed Performance Metrics

Today’s technology now allows employees of machine shops to view the same production metrics the company’s managers are monitoring. J&R Machine has invested in DMG MORI Messenger, a performance-based software measuring OEE (overall equipment effectiveness). The software provides detailed analyses and reports remotely through mobile devices and computers. All of J&R Machine’s machine tools are linked to the DMG MORI Messenger server with data being presented in real time, allowing J&R Machine to keep an enhanced eye on production and ensure smooth operations. Additionally, by displaying its metrics to employees, J&R Machine has seen measurable improvement on its shop floor.

Welding Automation

Robot welding has become an increasingly powerful and versatile manufacturing tool. With welding personnel becoming more expensive and difficult to find, robot welding allows many machine shops, like J&R Machine, to optimize staff by allowing highly-skilled welders to supervise multiple automated cells. The automation also produces the same quality results continuously, significantly reducing human error. Through robot welding, J&R Machine has also benefited from increased production.

Investment in Young Talent

Ultimately, the biggest opportunity for machine shops in the upcoming year is the recruitment of young, ambitious workers. Manufacturing is the industry that drives Wisconsin’s economy, and more and more schools are making the investment to help students prepare for an interesting, fulfilling and well-compensated career in manufacturing.

J&R Machine offers its employees great wages as well as a long list of benefits, including an in-house workout room. The average age of employees at J&R Machine is just 28, and the company is growing rapidly. The company looks to the local high school for students with the right attitude and skills. President Tim Tumanic prefers to hire high school graduates to ensure their training focuses on the methods that have made J&R Machine successful.

At the end of the year, with the celebratory season in full swing, we’ve taken some time to look back on the exciting year we’ve had. In 2015, J&R Machine, Inc. added industry-leading equipment and software to our shop, made improvements to enhance lean manufacturing processes, hired new team members, and welcomed many new customers and projects. We have a lot to be thankful for and encourage you to read through the year’s highlights below:

January:  J&R Machine invested in DMG MORI Messenger, a performance-based software measuring OEE (overall equipment effectiveness). The software provides detailed analyses and reports remotely through mobile devices and computers. All of J&R Machine’s machine tools are linked to the DMG MORI Messenger server with data being presented in real time, allowing J&R Machine to keep an enhanced eye on production and ensure smooth operations.

May: J&R Machine was featured in Modern Machine Shop. Titled “Leveraging CAD/CAM for High Density Machining,” the article focused on J&R Machine’s use of Mastercam CAM software from CNC Software for increased machining efficiency and lower labor costs.

June: J&R Machine connected with new businesses and showed off our latest technologies at the Design-2-Part-Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The event was unique in that 100 percent of its attendees were American-based businesses.

October: J&R Machine showcased industry-leading solutions at the Wisconsin Manufacturing and Technology Show. The event encouraged its guests to “Invest in Innovation” and compared top manufacturers, presented industry developments, and allowed buyers and investors to learn how to increase efficiency and profitability through advanced manufacturing technology.

During October, J&R Machine also exhibited at the 2015 Manufacturing First Expo & Conference. The event provided J&R Machine and other Wisconsin manufacturers with a unique opportunity to discover the latest industry trends and technologies, network, and collaborate.

November: J&R Machine hosted its first annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The company set a goal to feed 5-10 families, but our team of 30 employees donated enough to feed more than 15 families. J&R Machine also donated 15 turkeys to pair with all the side dishes and desserts donated by employees.

We are incredibly grateful for the business partners, dedicated employees and customers who made this year’s progress possible. And in this spirit, we say, simply but sincerely, “Thank You.”

We wish you a joyous holiday season and prosperous New Year and look forward to working with you in 2016!

J&R Machine will be closed December 25 and January 1 in celebration of the holiday season.

J&R Machine’s local food pantry, Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center (SAFPARC), feeds around 450 area families every Thanksgiving. The families receiving assistance from the pantry for their weekly needs are not in a position to spend extra funds for holiday meals.  Aware of this need, we sought to provide a vehicle for our employees to donate food to ensure members of our community have the opportunity to host a homemade holiday meal for their children, family, or friends with dignity.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Donation 2015

This Thanksgiving Food Drive was the first food drive J&R Machine has hosted, and we were incredibly humbled by the response.  We set a goal to feed 5-10 families, but our team of 30 employees donated enough to feed more than 15 families. J&R Machine also donated 15 turkeys to pair with all the side dishes and desserts donated by employees.

“We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the J&R Machine family for answering the call to give to others,” says Tim Tumanic, President of J&R Machine. “We are absolutely blown away by their generosity.”

So what’s on the menu?  J&R Machine will be providing SAFPARC with turkeys and ingredients to make green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie.

Hosting the food drive was simple. To spread the word to employees, flyers were placed in J&R Machine’s breakroom, and information about the event was posted within our organization’s SharePoint.

“Many soup kitchens and food pantries have difficulty keeping up with demand this time of the year,” says Tumanic. “We encourage all companies, regardless of size or industry, to consider hosting their own food drive this holiday season!”
