Earlier this month, more than 30 students and staff members from local high schools participated in a business tour of J&R Machine located in Shawano, WI. The tour began in J&R Machine’s lunchroom, talking about the many different job opportunities in the machining/manufacturing field. The students were then taken through the production floor where several J&R Machine employees spoke about their specific jobs. The goal of the tour was to give students an opportunity to view different and possibly new career paths.

When asked through a survey about what they liked most about their visit to J&R Machine, students responded saying they found J&R Machine’s robot welder and quality control area to be very interesting. They were also impressed with how clean J&R Machine’s manufacturing facility is and said it appeared to be “a great place to work!”

Students were also asked what surprised them during the tour and responded with:

–          How aggressive the pay and benefits are

–          That a college education isn’t required

–          J&R Machine’s dollar amount in sales

–          How organized the work environment is

–          How fast the machines and employees work

–          How expensive it is to run the business

–          The amount of technology that is utilized

J&R Machine was also very pleased to learn that 90% the students said the “tour sparked their interest in a manufacturing career.”

J&R Machine has been involved with local high schools for about ten years, and within the last two years, has invested $100,000 in creating a CNC lab at the Shawano High School, including 2 CNC machines, SolidWorks software, and Mastercam software.

Manufacturing is the industry that drives Wisconsin’s economy, and J&R Machine is continuously looking for ways to help local students better prepare for an interesting, fulfilling and well-compensated career in manufacturing.
